Wilma Rudolph This report is on Wilma Glodean Rudolph. Wilma was born June 23,1940 in Clarksville, Tennessee. William's education is: her mother tutored she until she started school when she was seven. She eventually graduated from the school, went to Tennessee State University and graduated with "flying colors". When Wilma was born she weighed only 4.5 pounds, and was the twentieth of twenty-two children! Since than she was nursed by her mother until she was seven. She was sick all the time. She had measles, mumps, scarlet fever, chicken pox, and double pneumonia. She had to be taken to the doctor because her left leg was getting very weak, she soon found out she had polio in her left leg. They thought she would never walk again. But she and her mother would never give up hope that easily. The only place Wilma could go to get treated was at Meharry Hospital, the black medical college of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. It was fifty miles away but her mother took her twice a week for two years until she could walk with the help of a metal brace on her leg Finally at the age of twelve a miracle happened, she walk without a metal brace, without a crutch, without any help at all. In junior high school she followed her sister's footsteps and became a basketball player. The coach Clinton Gray did not put her in a game for three years. He finally started she her sophomore year. She started as point guard. During a tournament she was spotted by Ed Temple the couch of the famous track team called the Tigerbells. Because her school did not have a track team Ed invited Wilma to a summer sports camp for track at Tennessee State University. After graduating from high school, she received a sports scholarship and went to Tennessee State University. Because of her celebrity from her track carrier she took a year off year studies, she made appearances and participated in International track events. She returned to her studies and received a degree in education when she graduated in 1963. In 1963 she also married her high school sweetheart, Robert Eldrige, with whom she had four children, Yolanda {1958}, Djuanna {1964}, Robert Jr. {1965}, and Xurry {1971}. They later got divorced. Now I will tell you about her accomplishments. Her first accomplishment was just staying alive. But after that she won a bronze metal in the 4x4 relay race in the1956 Olympic Games at the age of 16. On September 17th 1960 in Rome she became the first women to win three Olympic gold metals. She won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and ran the anchor in the 400-meter relay team. That led her to become one of the most celebrated female athletes in history. Because of her celebrity she caused gender barriers to be broken. Because, previously women were not allowed in all track events. So she went where no women have gone before, and so did other women thanks to her. She had the first party recorded in Clarksville history where blacks and whites gathered for the same event. She also went on to protest about segregation until the laws where brought down. After retiring from her track carrier she went back to Clarksville and taught at her old school Cobb Elementary, and was the track coach at her alma matter, Burt High School. In May of 1977, I was just like every other seven year old in America wanting to be just like Darth Vader and use the force to control all my toys. During the 2011 Super Bowl, Volkswagen made a commercial that made my dream of 35 years come true. In this commercial, a young boy pretending to be Darth Vader, storms down the hall, attempting to use â€Å"the force† to move a treadmill without avail. After many fruitless attempts at controlling everything inside the house, his last attempt is a success due in part to his dad’s new Volkswagen Passat, which has a remote start on his key. The young boy runs past his father, to the front of the car to use the force. He aims his hand toward the car and to the child’s astonishment the force, has finally worked. The rhetorical techniques of logos, ethos and pathos are present and are there to persuade the intended audience. First of all, the advertisement relies on an appeal to reason for its basis. This commercial was created to target an audience that can recognize Darth Vader and Volkswagens. Star Wars references are deeply embedded in our popular culture and it would be safe to say most Americans are aware of phrases that have become part of the popular lexicon, for example â€Å"May the Force be with You†. This commercial appeal to most people because of the fact that every parent enjoys seeing their child uses their imagination and creativity. It also shows his father in the end playing along, amazing his son. Through the commercial Volkswagen recalls a childlike innocence about the car making it suitable for a family. Secondly, Volkswagen brings in an appeal to credibility to convince the advertisement’s viewers. Darth Vader is known throughout the world as one of the most recognized villains including his infamous death-march music. This commercial would not be same if an adult was used instead of a child to play the part of Darth Vader. Volkswagen uses the popularity of the super bowl commercials to convey the fact that they made the same car with the quality of Volkswagen in an all new design for the 2011 model year. By using both parent in the commercial, Volkswagen established that the Passat is a family car and convinces the audiences to purchase the new car. Volkswagen’s final appeal is to emotions to make the consumer want to believe that purchasing a new Passat can give you the power of the force. In addition to the imagery of Darth Vader, the music of Star Wars is easily recognized around the world. The death-march music gives the audience something to remember the commercial by over any other commercial shown on that day. In addition, in the final scene when the father turns the car on and the child thinks he has used the force, this ties the entire scene together and leaves a lasting impression of the commercial with the audience. The main point of this commercial is to sell the new Volkswagen Passat. The use of a child pretending to be Darth Vader evokes an emotional appeal to innocence. As does the use of the all American family household, a stay at home mother and a father who after a long day still has time to play with his son. Also in the commercial, the minimal use of dialog and the use of music convey a simple yet memorable message to its audience. In conclusion, Volkswagen was able to successfully use rhetoric to make a funny and witty ad that appealed to a mass audience and sends a clear message to purchase a new car and you too can use the force.

The organization I last worked with is an IT/ITES company, which is one of the fastest growing fortune 500 companies. The organization has a balanced out structure however there is a little dominance towards ‘The Market’. As per my experience I can say that the reason for this is that the organization is relatively young and striving to compete with the best in the industry. This requires leaders to be competitive and to an extent demanding. Also the employees are dedicated towards the company’s vision and hence strive to achieve the goals and targets set for them. Culture – Strong. People are focused on innovating and brainstorming towards ideas that the management can implement and improve their processes. The company is people oriented which in turn creates a high commitment level from the employees. The organization has leaders who are efficient and ensure smooth running of the company. The company is sensitive towards the clients and customers and goes an extra mile to deliver better than the expectations. This is the reason for them to be able to retain customers and get new businesses. Another fact that I am aware of is that the organization has not till date fired any employee unless in extreme ethical sensitive issues. An example of people being valued and everyone considered equal is that when I joined the company as a fresher some of my friends who ad joined along with me sent a mail to the CEO regarding a certain issue and got a reply from him with the action that would be taken. Since mostly the organizational structure is balanced out there is not much discrepancy. I would however like the company reduce its dominance in the Market style and according to me that will happen with time. Yes there is a cultural congruence and that is mainly because the company’s culture was same as my expectation.
